HDD – Horizontal Directional Drilling

Horizontal directional drilling installs pipe and conduit along a designed curve between an entry and an exit point, without opening the ground in between. Where a crossing would otherwise mean closing a highway, disturbing a river bed or excavating through an established neighbourhood, HDD removes the surface disruption entirely — and with it most of the permitting, restoration and community impact that the open cut would have carried.

The method is precise but unforgiving of poor planning. Success is determined before the rig starts: by the geotechnical investigation that establishes what the bore will actually pass through, by a bore path designed within the pipe's allowable bend radius, and by a drilling fluid programme matched to the ground conditions. We treat all three as engineering deliverables rather than field decisions.

Our rigs cover everything from short utility crossings to long river and highway installations, with steering tracked continuously against the design profile so deviation is corrected while correction is still straightforward.

Geotechnical review: Borehole interpretation and ground characterisation along the full alignment before a bore path is committed to.
Bore path design: Entry and exit angles, depth of cover and radius designed within the allowable bend radius of the product pipe.
Pilot bore & reaming: Steered pilot hole followed by staged reaming to the diameter the pullback requires.
Product pullback: Steel, HDPE and bundled conduit installed with tension monitored against calculated limits throughout.
Site restoration: Entry and exit pits backfilled and restored, with drilling fluid recovered and disposed of to permit conditions.
Ground-matched fluid programme: Drilling fluid is engineered for the formation to carry cuttings, stabilise the annulus and protect against inadvertent returns.
Continuous steering control: Walkover or wireline tracking compares actual position to the design profile in real time, so deviation is corrected early.
Frac-out prevention: Annular pressure is calculated and monitored against formation limits, with a containment and response plan ready before spud.
Pullback risk management: Tensile and buckling loads are calculated in advance and monitored live, protecting the product pipe during installation.
Contingency planning: Obstruction, loss-of-returns and abandonment procedures are agreed before mobilisation rather than improvised on site.
No surface disruption: Highways, railways, rivers and developed land are crossed without closure, detour or open excavation.
Environmental protection: Watercourses and sensitive habitat are passed beneath, avoiding in-stream disturbance and the approvals it triggers.
Self-performed: Our own rigs, crews and locating equipment — schedule and quality stay under our control, not a subcontractor's.
Documented as-builts: Final bore profile and depth-of-cover records are issued so the owner knows exactly where the asset sits.
