Almost every trenchless installation begins and ends in a shaft, and the shaft is where the ground conditions are met head-on. It has to resist earth and water pressure, provide the thrust reaction the drive demands, keep a crew safe at depth, and frequently remain in place afterwards as a permanent manhole or pump station structure.

We build working, drop, access and permanent shafts using the method the ground calls for: secant and tangent pile walls for deep shafts in difficult or water-bearing ground, sunk caissons where the profile suits, liner plate and ribbed-lagging for shallower work, and sheet pile where site geometry allows.

Every shaft is engineered rather than adapted from a standard detail. Groundwater is controlled by dewatering, cut-off or ground treatment as conditions require, and the design accounts for the loads the drive will impose — not just the soil around it.

Secant & tangent pile shafts: Deep shafts in difficult and water-bearing ground with an integral groundwater cut-off.
Caisson shafts: Precast and cast-in-place caissons sunk to depth, suited to permanent structures.
Liner plate & ribbed lagging: Economical shallow and medium-depth shafts in stable ground conditions.
Sheet pile shafts: Driven and vibrated sheet pile shafts with internal bracing where geometry and ground permit.
Permanent structures: Shafts completed as manholes, wet wells, drop structures and pump station bases.
Engineered design: Every shaft is designed by a professional engineer for the actual ground, water and drive loads — never adapted from a standard detail.
Groundwater control: Dewatering, cut-off walls or ground treatment selected on the hydrogeology rather than habit.
Thrust reaction: Reaction structures designed for the full jacking or ramming load the planned drive will impose.
Confined space management: Entry permits, continuous atmospheric monitoring, ventilation and rescue provision on every shaft.
Adjacent structure protection: Movement monitoring and, where needed, underpinning to protect nearby buildings and utilities.
Method breadth: Five construction methods in-house means the shaft matches the ground, not our equipment list.
Deep & wet ground: Proven shafts well below the water table where simpler methods cannot be made safe.
Integrated with the drive: Designed by the team that will tunnel from it, so the reaction and geometry are right the first time.
Permanent works: Temporary shafts converted into finished structures, removing a duplicate excavation from the programme.
